  2026 GB TALKS #1 "Circulating Images, Shared Songs" Conceived in the year of the 16th Gwangju Biennale (2026), GB TALKS is a discussion series that engages with ideas around the Biennale. Taking place across two sessions in March and November in Seoul and Gwangju, the programme opens on 13 March in Seoul with a first event that examines historical and media contexts of the 1980s, with Gwangju as a central point of reference. This session of GB TALKS focuses on media that were easily reproducible and widely circulated—video tapes, cassette tapes, and woodblock prints—which played an important role during South Korea’s democratic movement in the 1980s. More than tools of documentation, these media facilitated the circulation of images, songs, and messages under conditions of censorship and control, fostering new forms of collective expression and social connection.   The 16th Gwangju Biennale Pre-Programme Workshop: One or Multiple Gwangju(s) As an early experiment in thinking together, the 16th Gwangju Biennale Pre-Programme Workshop on 13 December sets the conceptual and affective groundwork for the upcoming Biennale. We invite you to join us in imagining how these ideas may unfold in the year ahead. [*Program Details] Structured in two parts, Session 1 One or Multiple Gwangju(s)? begins with Artistic Director Ho Tzu Nyen’s introduction to one of the Biennale’s central enquiries: change. He will outline changes of different natures, scales and rates—weather self-willed or imposed. Professor Jeong Myungjung follows by reframing May 18 as a “multiplicity,” tracing its collective assemblage and emergent change. Park Gahee closes the session by revisiting how the city of Gwangju has appeared throughout previous editions of the Biennale, opening up possibilities for thinking about Gwangju as a composite and continuously changing entity. The tenth featured artist, Yoon JunYeong, explores the emotional terrains shaped by human existence—anxiety, loss, and the subtle moments of recovery that emerge between them. Her paintings reflect the perspective of looking in from the outside, gazing at those who have lost their place, been cast out, or can no longer call themselves ‘I’. Through these figures, she traces relationships, forms of coexistence, and archetypal images of the inner self. The eighth featured artist, Chun Young-rok, works by accumulating countless dots made with watercolor pigments mixed with melted snow on layers of handmade Korean paper (hanji). Through this process, color and form fill the surface in rhythmic repetition, creating patterns that evoke both order and movement. The densely layered dots shimmer like light hidden within snow, revealing vibrant hues that recall the ever-changing landscapes of nature and the passage of seasons.
