SubjectGB Artist Focus ⑦Shin Ho Yoon

GB Artist Focus

GB Artist Focus offers an opportunity to meet artists in person, hear their stories, and gain deeper insight into their creative worlds. The program is organized in collaboration with cultural and artistic spaces in Gwangju. The seventh featured artist, Shin Hoyoon, explores the boundaries between reality and fiction, presence and absence, through his sculptural practice of structuring paper into three-dimensional forms. By binding fragile paper into meticulous layers to create resilient structures, his work has emerged as a compelling sensory language in contemporary sculpture, raising critical questions about conventional perceptions.

A more in-depth conversation about Shin’s artistic attitude and practice will unfold in dialogue with curator Kim Sungwoo.

[About the Artist]

Shin Hoyoon studied sculpture at Chosun University’s College of Fine Arts and has established a unique practice since 2005, constructing three-dimensional works primarily with paper. He has held solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group shows in Gwangju, Seoul, Beijing, and Bangkok. His artistic achievements have been recognized with the Gwangju Art Award, the Grand Prize at the Gwangju Shinsegae Art Exhibition, and the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Lucca Biennale in Italy. Major exhibitions include Shin Hoyoon – Island Beyond at the Gwangju Museum of Art and Swatch Faces 2022 at the Venice Biennale.

Through paper, Shin reveals the sculptural tension between reality and illusion, presence and semblance. His paradoxical approach—transforming a fragile material into solid structures—suggests both the expansiveness of contemporary sculpture and the depth of conceptual inquiry, while inviting viewers to awaken beyond the familiar frames of visual language.
