SubjectGwangju Biennale Hits 1 Month

The 10th Gwangju Biennale: Burning Down the House has reached the halfway mark in this year’s edition, with just one month left in its run. Asia’s largest art event this year includes 103 artist groups from 38 countries for a total of 413 works of art. Celebrating the 20th anniversary since the foundation’s inception, interactive satellite programming has helped boost festivities. In the first month of the Biennale’s open, 69,000 visitors (a preliminary estimate) have made their way to the show.

Art education has been a major focal point for this year, with regional schools and universities reserving group tickets for field trips. This year’s student visitors were also aided by a specially developed educational packet, which include abbreviated introductions to a selection of artworks handpicked by Artistic Director Jessica Morgan. Gwangju Art High School, Ulsan Art High School, Gyeongnam Art High School have all visited the Biennale, in addition to the art departments of Seoul National University and others from across the peninsula. Younger audiences from elementary schools have also visited.

VIPs have also made their way to Gwangju to see the exhibition. National Assembly speaker Jung Ui-hwa spent two hours in the Biennale Hall on September 13, and the ambassadors to Korea from Spain and France have also made appearances. From elsewhere in the art world, representatives from Art Basel, Yokohama Triennale, Kobe Biennale, and institutions within Korea have come to Gwangju.

There are plenty of opportunities for those still planning a visit in the coming month. Hardworking office employees can see the exhibition on Culture Day, the last Wednesday of October, when the Gwangju Biennale will open till 8pm. In addition, tickets purchased after 6pm on Culture Day will be up to 50 percent off.

If you’ve never traveled around the southern coast of Korea, this is the perfect opportunity to take in the sights along with the art. Jane Tour & DMC offers 1-night, 2-day vacation packages perfect for a weekend getaway.

“In the month since the opening of the 2014 Gwangju Biennale, visitors have not been spare in their favorable reviews of this year’s cutting-edge art,” said interim president Chung Dong Chea. “In the next month we will organize even more opportunities for communication so that as many citizens as possible will be able to view the Biennale.”
