The Gwangju Biennale (President Park Yang-woo) kicked off its robust promotional campaign on May 30, 100 days prior to the opening. Ticket sales have commenced, and in celebration of the D-100 milestone, the event organized a “Madang Sketchbook” drawing competition with citizens.

Utilizing Various Spaces in Yangrnim-dong for the 15th Gwangju Biennale Exhibitions

To commemorate its 30th anniversary, the 15th Gwangju Biennale, titled Pansori, a soundscape of the 21st century, will take place from September 7, 2024, to December 1, 2024 spanning 86 days at the Gwangju Biennale Exhibition Hall venues across Yangnim-dong.

With internationally acclaimed Nicolas Bourriaud as its artistic director, the exhibition will feature 73 artists from 30 countries, presenting an exhibition that intertwines sound and space through Pansori.

The 15th Gwangju Biennale, titled Pansori, a soundscape of the 21st century will activate the Gwangju Biennale Exhibition Hall in Yongbong-dong and the surrounding area of Yangnim-dong into contemporary art spaces.

In particular, the exhibitions in the Yangnim-dong area feature artworks installed in everyday spaces, signaling the possibility of coexistence and solidarity between art and life. Diverse collaborative works, including sound projects utilizing old police stations and vacant houses, as well as those based on audience participation, will be showcased.

Yangnim-dong Culture Center, Podonamu Art Space, Gallery Han Boocheol, Han Hee Won Museum of Art, Yangnim Salon, the Old Police Station building, Empty house 1, and Horanggasy Art Polygon serve as exhibition spaces. Included among the participating artists are Julian Abraham Togar, Lydia Ourahmane, Jun Hyoung San, Marina Rosenfeld, Saâdane Afif, Kim Jai, Kim Hyung-sook, Angela Bulloch, Kim Young-eun, and Mira Mann.

Consequently, visitors can experience a diverse range of contemporary art as they explore various spots throughout Yangnim-dong, in addition to the Gwangju Biennale Exhibition Hall.

On September 6, 2024, the day before the official opening, the 15th Gwangju Biennale will commence with an opening ceremony featuring performances by participating artists, based on the writings of novelist Han Kang. Additionally, an academic symposium will be held on September 8, at the Asia Culture Center.

A pre-opening for art industry experts is scheduled from September 5, to September 6.

Ticket reservations for the 15th Gwangju Biennale are now open

On Saturday, May 25, 2024, in line with the commencement of ticket sales for the 15th Gwangju Biennale, the ceremony for the delivery of the first ticket took place at the stage of the 59th Gwangju Citizens' Day. The first ticket was purchased by Kim So Yeon, CEO of ESteem Group, a creative content company leading new trends in the fields of fashion, beauty, and lifestyle.

D-100 Celebration': Successful Completion of “Madang Sketchbook” with Citizens

On May 29, 2024, the Gwangju Biennale Foundation held the “Madang Sketchbook” drawing competition to commemorate the Biennale’s D-100 with citizens. Around 100 teams joined the event and drew on the Biennale Square in front of the Gwangju Biennale Exhibition Hall, enjoying a delightful time together.

At the "madang", literally translating as “yard” in English, around 200 participants gathered and freely drew on the canvas with chalk, focusing on the theme of "climate crisis," which is connected to the overarching theme of Pansori, a soundscape of the 21st century. The madang, which was turned into canvases by the participants, has been a meaningful space over the past 30 years of the Gwangju Biennale, where contemporary art has been displayed, and many people have gathered and participated. It was successfully concluded with the drawings of the participants commemorating D-100, filling the space with vibrant artwork.

Participants from diverse age groups, including students from institutions such as Gwangju Arts High School, Yongju Elementary School, and Honam University, as well as families, joined the event by registering in advance and on-site. In addition, an event titled “Hanging Support Message Ribbons for the 15th Gwangju Biennale” was held where citizens wished for the successful opening of the 15th Gwangju Biennale, which will open in 100 days.

The judging panel for this competition included Kang In-ho, Vice President of the Branch of Korea Fine Arts Association, and media artist Lee Nam. They selected a total of nine winners, including the Grand Prize, Excellence Award, Outstanding Award, and Special Award. Winners were awarded certificates of merit along with prizes such as gift vouchers and tickets to the 15th Gwangju Biennale.

Park Yang-woo, President of the Gwangju Biennale, expressed, "The opening of the 15th Gwangju Biennale in September is just 100 days away." He further stated, "I extend my deepest gratitude to all participants of this competition and assure you that we are preparing an exhibition that is dignified and substantial, befitting our 30th anniversary."

Prior to this, on March 29, 2024, a special lecture titled “Contemporary Art and Biennales” by Artistic Director Nicolas Bourriaud was held at the Asia Cultural Center. It was attended by over 300 people, demonstrating the widespread interest and high expectations for the 15th Gwangju Biennale.
