13th Gwangju Biennale in 2020 exhibition period extended

Exhibition set for September 4th - November 29, extended for 21 additional days from its previous 66 day run

The exhibition period of the 13th Gwangju Biennale to be held in 2020 has been extended from 66 days to 87 days.

The Gwangju Biennale Foundation stated, the “extension of the exhibition period for the 13th Gwangju Biennale in 2020” was deliberated and approved at the 164th board meeting. In response, the 13th Gwangju Biennale next year will be held from September 4 to November 29.

Previous editions of the Biennale ran for 66 days from the first Friday of September to the first Sunday of November. The 13th Gwangju Biennale in 2020 will coincide with the 40th anniversary of the May 18th Democratic Uprising which is the foundation of the Biennale. The timeliness prompted the organizers to adjust the exhibition period to reflect the spirit of Gwangju, expand opportunities for artistic empathy during the exhibition, and provide ample viewing time for students who have completed the College Scholastic Ability Test.

"The Gwangju Biennale, founded in 1995 and established as a leading contemporary art festival representing Asia, will play a bigger role as the cultural and art hub of Asia," said Kim Sunjung, President of the Gwangju Biennale Foundation. "Depending on the outcome of the extended operation, we will consider continuing the practice for future editions."
